This morning, the Chicago Tribune reported on an uberX partner in Chicago who had been convicted of a felony offense, an offense that was not picked up by our multi-state background check process.

We immediately deactivated the driver, and continue to investigate the gap that caused this to occur. This is unacceptable to us, just as it is to riders and the rest of the Uber community.

In the meantime, we have already taken steps to prevent this from happening again, by expanding our background check process to set new, stringent standards. As part of this expanded program, we are running Federal, Multi-State and County level background checks on all prospective uberX partners and re-running them for all existing partners.

We are sincerely sorry for this error, and want to assure all riders that we are taking the necessary steps to fix it and build the safest option for consumers.
