DC Council Clears Path for a More Reliable uberX
In DC we’ve seen first-hand the impact that our users’ voices can make. In the past month we’ve heard your voices call for greater reliability with low cost, high quality transportation options like uberX. Today, with the help of the DC Council, we’re increasing the supply of vehicles on the uberX platform through ridesharing.
WHAT IS CHANGING?
To meet the overwhelming demand for uberX, we’re now testing ridesharing on uberX in DC. This change will make uberX more reliable than ever by adding high quality partners who are driving privately owned cars with standard driver’s licenses.
WHO TO THANK?
Today, DC Councilmember Mary Cheh—with help from co-sponsors Councilmembers David Grosso and Jack Evans—passed emergency legislation allowing ridesharing. This will ensure access to even more reliable, low-cost, high quality rides with Uber. The DCTC has also put together a special panel to study ridesharing options in the District.
HOW ARE RIDESHARING PARTNERS SCREENED?
We remain committed to maintaining the high quality you’ve come to expect when using the Uber app. The UberBLACK, SUV, and uberTAXI options remain unchanged, and will continue to use only commercially licensed for-hire drivers. For uberX, partners must pass a rigorous screening process, including:
- Stringent background checks
- Driving history checks
- In-person interviews and screenings
- Ongoing quality controls
- Verification of insurance coverage
- A zero-tolerance policy regarding drugs and alcohol when using the Uber platform
THE BOTTOM LINE.
Connecting users to safe, reliable, and comfortable rides remains our highest priority. For users in DC the ride experience with uberX will stay the same, but uberX will be more available, more reliable, and have shorter wait times than ever.
